Storyline: Twelve Monkeys begins in the year 2035. A deadly virus has killed most of the world's people. The survivors live underground. Therefore, scientists send a prisoner named James Cole back in time.

His mission is to find the original virus and learn about it. This information could help scientists in the future. However, time travel is not perfect. Consequently, Cole accidentally arrives in 1990 instead of 1996.

The police immediately arrest him because he sounds crazy. So, they put him in a mental hospital. There, he meets a doctor named Kathryn Railly and a very unstable patient named Jeffrey Goines.

Cole eventually returns to the future. Then, the scientists send him back to 1996, which is the correct time. He finds Dr. Railly again and convinces her to help him. Meanwhile, they discover that Jeffrey Goines leads a radical group called the "Army of the Twelve Monkeys."

They initially think this group released the virus. Therefore, they try to stop them. However, they soon learn the truth: the Twelve Monkeys are not responsible. Instead, a scientist who worked for Jeffrey's father is the real culprit.

In the end, Cole and Kathryn race to the airport to stop the scientist. Unfortunately, they are too late. The virus is already released. A police officer then shoots and kills Cole. In the final scene, a young Cole in 1996 sees his own future death, creating a tragic time loop.
