Storyline: Full Metal Jacket begins at a marine boot camp. A very tough drill instructor named Sergeant Hartman trains new soldiers. He constantly shouts at them and tries to make them tough.

One soldier, named Private Pyle, struggles very much. He is overweight and clumsy. Therefore, the other soldiers must also suffer because of his mistakes. At first, they help him. However, later they become angry and attack him.

Consequently, Pyle becomes mentally unstable. He starts talking to his rifle. Finally, one night he shoots Sergeant Hartman and then kills himself.

After this tragedy, the other soldiers go to Vietnam. The main character, Private Joker, is now a military journalist. He writes stories about the war. Later, he is sent to the city of Hue during a big battle.

There, his squad must fight a hidden enemy sniper. The sniper wounds and kills several soldiers. Eventually, they find the sniper. She is just a young Vietnamese girl.

The soldiers want to kill her. However, Joker struggles with this decision. He does not want to leave her in pain. In the end, he shoots her to end her suffering.

As they march away, the soldiers sing a happy children's song. This shows how the war has changed them. They started as normal young men, but the war has made them into different people. They have lost their innocence in a very violent and confusing world.
