Storyline: American History X tells the story of two brothers. Derek Vinyard is a smart and charismatic young man. However, after his father is killed, he becomes very angry and filled with hate. Consequently, he becomes the leader of a violent neo-Nazi skinhead group.

One night, Derek catches two Black men trying to steal his car. He becomes enraged and brutally kills one of them. Therefore, he is sent to prison for three years.

Meanwhile, his younger brother Danny idolizes him. Danny is following the same dangerous path of racism and violence. He is also getting into trouble at school.

In prison, Derek quickly learns that his racist beliefs do not protect him. In fact, he is forced to work with a Black man in the prison laundry. Furthermore, this man becomes his only friend. Consequently, Derek's hateful ideas begin to change completely.

After he is released from prison, Derek is a different person. He now wants to save his brother. So, he tries desperately to show Danny the truth. He explains that hate only leads to more pain and suffering.

However, it is very difficult to escape the past. At school the next day, a Black student that Danny had angered earlier shoots and kills him in the bathroom. In the end, Derek is left holding his dead brother, completely destroyed by the very cycle of violence he once helped to create.
