Storyline: American Gangster begins in 1968 Harlem. Frank Lucas works for a powerful gangster. When his boss suddenly dies, Frank sees a big opportunity. Therefore, he decides to build his own drug empire.

First, he travels directly to Southeast Asia. There, he makes a deal with suppliers during the Vietnam War. Consequently, he starts importing very pure heroin himself. He calls his product "Blue Magic."

At the same time, a honest cop named Richie Roberts is put in charge of a special task force. His mission is to find the source of this new, pure heroin. However, most of the police department is corrupt, so his job is very difficult.

Richie's investigation slowly leads him to Frank Lucas. Therefore, Frank's success begins to attract dangerous attention from both rivals and the law. Eventually, Richie gathers enough evidence.

In the end, the police arrest Frank and his entire family. Frank then makes a difficult choice. He decides to help the police by testifying against all the corrupt cops. Consequently, he gets a shorter prison sentence. Finally, after he is released, Frank Lucas becomes a free man, but his criminal empire is completely gone.
