Storyline: American Made begins with Barry Seal, a bored airline pilot. He sometimes smuggles cigars to make extra money. One day, however, a CIA agent named Monty Schafer approaches him. He offers Barry an exciting and dangerous new job.

Therefore, Barry agrees to work for the CIA. His mission is to take pictures of communist camps in Central America. He flies a small, fast plane very low to avoid radar. Meanwhile, he also starts working for the Medellín drug cartel. They pay him huge amounts of cash to fly cocaine back into the United States.

Consequently, Barry becomes incredibly rich very quickly. He buries bags of money in his yard. Furthermore, he gets his brother-in-law to help him because the work is too much for one person. However, all this illegal activity soon attracts attention.

First, the DEA starts investigating him. Then, the cartel begins to distrust him. So, Barry makes a deal with the White House. He becomes an informant against the cartel in exchange for protection.

Unfortunately, this puts him in even more danger. The cartel finds out he is helping the government. Consequently, they send killers after him. In the end, Barry is shot and killed in his neighborhood. The movie concludes by showing how his wild life of crime and adventure ultimately led to his tragic death, leaving behind a complicated legacy.
